Native issues taken up by international NGO-star reports
By STEPHEN THEN
MIRI: A London-based organisation wants the international community and governments to stop classifying energy-production projects as “green” if such projects affect the lives of native communities.
The latest report from Survival International, a global organisation involved in protecting tribal people, said native people and the environment were suffering more now because of so-called green projects being implemented by governments and rich corporations.
Survival International director Stephen Corry, in an e-mail to The Star yesterday, furnished a copy of the latest report entitled The Most Inconvenient Truth of All, in which the RM9bil Bakun Dam and RM3bil Murum Dam projects in central Sarawak were cited as among global projects that had harmed the indigenous people and environment.
The report also criticised similar projects in places in Africa and other continents.
“Bio-fuel is being promoted all over the world as the alternative green energy to fossil fuels.
“However, in the pretext of going green, the reverse is actually happening.
“From South America to Borneo, we are seeing the destruction of massive areas of jungles and the ruin of ancestral homes belonging to tribal people.
“Projects that victimise the people and harm the environment cannot be promoted or marketed as green projects,” said Corry.
Corry said the world community must see through the hidden agendas.
The report called for a complete global re-look of hydro-electric dam and bio-fuel projects because these were causing even more harm to the people and environment than previously.
Orang Ulu request for ministerial post

By Lucas Jalong Bato
MIRI: The Berawans supported the request made by the delegation led by Orang Ulu Baram paramount chief Temenggong Pahang Ding to the top BN leadership to include an Orang Ulu assemblyman in the state cabinet.
On Thursday the delegation made the request through the deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu whom they met at Miri airport before his departure to Kuching. He was in Miri to officiate the Sarawak Kenyah Cultural Festival.
A Berawan headman TK Edmund Abang of Long Terawan said the Berawan community would like to see the assemblyman from Telang Usan Lihan Jok be included in the state cabinet at least holding the assistant minister post.
“Among the four Orang Ulu assemblymen Lihan is the most senior and deserved a shot at serving the community as an assistant minister. He has proven to be a hard working assemblyman for our constituency and if appointed as an assistant minister he would be more effective in serving the people,” said Edmund.
A councillor from Baram district council Garry Hashim believed Lihan would make a good assistant minister representing the Orang Ulu since the last time the community was represented was during the late Dr Judson Tagal who was the Ba Kelalan assemblyman.
A free lance tour operator Mathew Mawit agreed that an Orang Ulu should be included in the state cabinet in the spirit of 1Malaysia.
A youth leader from the Berawan community Alexander Laing supported the call for Lihan to be appointed as an assistant minister.
“I believe he will be a dynamic assistant minister because even while as an assemblyman he has served the people in his constituency tirelessly,” said Alexander.
During the recent minor cabinet reshuffle, the Orang Ulu was not included even though all its assemblymen are in the Barisan Nasional.
During the last state election in 2006 the Orang Ulu constituencies of Telang Usan, Ba Kelalan, Belaga and the new constituency of Batu Danau saw all BN candidates from the Orang Ulu community winning comfortably against the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
Meanwhile a former state cabinet minister from the Orang Ulu community Datuk Joseph Balan Seling when contacted by phone, pointed out that it is not easy for the top BN leadership to please everybody when it comes to appoint ministers in the cabinet.
“I am confident that the chief minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib has his reason because he has to see the overall political situation,” said Balan.
The Orang Ulu community has a political secretary to the chief minister Robert Laing Anyie.

Kenyah National Association- 2nd Cultural Festival
MIRI: The state government encourages the advancement of every ethnic culture in Sarawak because it sees unity in diversity as a reality among the various communities.
“That is why under the visionary leadership of our chief minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who had initiated the Ethnic Symposium for all the major ethnic groups in Sarawak every five years. The state government recognises the important of ethnic cultures of its people. If we don't preserve our cultural heritage, we lose our identity,” said the deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu ak Numpang.
He said this when officiating the 2nd Sarawak Kenyah Cultural Festival at the Civic Centre yesterday.
Also present were the deputy minister of International Trade and Industries Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan, the assistant minister of Public Utilities (Water Supply) and Land Development Sylvester Entri ak Muran, the Telang Usan assemblyman Lihan Jok, the political secretary of the chief minister Robert Laing Anyie, the Miri Resident Ganie Ugay , the organising chairman Kennedy Chuk Pai Ugon, the president of the Kenyah National Association (PKKS) Marcus Gau Lian, the Orang Ulu paramount chief of Baram Temenggong Pahang Ding and several Kenyah community leaders.
Jabu said Sarawak has the richest cultural tradition which is recognised internationally. He recounted how 35 years ago he was instrumental in sending two Kenyah sape players from Long Makaba to play in Tokyo, Japan.
“That was 35 years ago. Now, the Orang Ulu community will have the Sape Academy in Miri soon,” said Jabu.
The deputy chief minister reminded the Kenyah community to always put the education of their children as the top priority even though the community is very strong in preserving their culture like the dance and songs.
“Human capacity building is vital for the country to progress and become competitive in this very challenging era. On one hand, it is good that we preserve our culture but on the other hand we must not neglect the education of our children,” said Jabu.
He announced a minor rural project (MRP) grant amounting RM5,000 to the association for having successfully organised the three-day festival.
Jabu commended the organising committee for choosing the slogan “Cha Peng, Cha Tawai, Cha Kenyah” because it is in tandem with the spirit of 1Malaysia.
Any community that seeks to foster unity will be supported by the government for it is in the spirit of unity and wanting to share with one another we can progress, said Jabu.ENDS.

pro-life bishop of miri
MIRI: The Roman Catholic Bishop of Miri the Right Reverend Anthony Lee received a surprise anniversary celebration as the bishop of Miri for 32 years during a break of the 16th Human Life International Asia Pacific Congress on Faith, Life & Family.
“This is the biggest anniversary celebration I ever had,” said Lee before more than 600 participants from 17 countries taking part in the congress organised by the Human Life Services Centre.
“And the smallest cake, ” he said in jest making the participants broke out in laughter.
“Not only is the cake the smallest but it's chocolate and I hate chocolate, but I must still swallow this bitter pill which is symbolic,” he added.
Not only much revered but much loved by the catholics in the Miri diocese, Lee was instrumental in promoting the pro-life movement in Miri with the setting up of the Human Life Services Centre.
He travelled even to the rural areas spreading the message of the gospel of life as he began to see in his struggle as an pro-life activist the evil of the culture of death spread through the promotion of abortion and contraception. ENDS.

unfair treatment to native passengers
MIRI: Five rural natives travelling by air from Long Banga were unceremoniously dumped at Marudi on their way to Miri recently.
Stranded at Marudi airport they happened to meet lawyer Robert Ayu who coincidentally was waiting for his flight to Miri. They approached Ayu and requested that their plight be highlighted in the media.
According to Ayu, the five stranded passengers were on board Maswing MH3591 together with nine other passengers from Long Banga to Miri at 11:20 am transit Marudi.
“They had paid the full fare of RM88 to Miri in Long Banga but on arrival at Marudi they were arbitrarily off-loaded to give way for passengers from Marudi to Miri,” said Robert.
They were asked to wait for the last flight on waiting list. There was no valid reason given by the agent at Marudi airport except to say system breakdown.
What annoyed the passengers was that the agent refused their request to be put on board the flight despite the fact that they told they had urgent matters to attend in Miri.
One passenger, Jessy Keling who received the news of the death of her uncle in Miri through the radio flew down from Long Banga, told the agent she had to be in Miri that day for her relatives were waiting for her arrival in order to proceed with the burial of her uncle.
In spite of this explanation, the agent refused to put her on the flight.
“My relatives had to put off the burial to the next day to wait for my arrival if I can get a flight the next day,” she lamented in tears to Robert.
Another passenger Lucia Lerang was catching a connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur at 6pm that day was questioning, why pick on us, is it because we are poor? Why not ask the Marudi passengers to wait for the last flight instead of us?
Susan Udau, another passenger pointed out that they should be put on the next available flight instead of the last flight because they don't have relatives in Marudi. What if there is no seat available on the last flight, where will we stay for the night in Marudi?
According to Robert, this act of off-loading rural passengers in Marudi to give way for passengers in Marudi had been going for quite a while because it is not computerised at the departure point in the rural area like in Long Banga. ENDS.

natural method of family planning
MIRI: The president of Ovulation Method, Research & Reference Centre Australia, Kerry Bourke urged couples to adopt the Billings ovulation method because it is the most effective and yet inexpensive method of family planning.
"I urge couples everywhere to give it a go for this method works and it is the natural method of family planning without any side effect compared to most artificial form of family planning, including the pill and even using the condom," said Bourke.
She told this to reporters during a press conference yesterday. She was here to conduct a workshop on the method for about 50 participants.
She was currently in Miri to speak at the 16th Human Life International Asia Pacific Congress, organised by the Human Life Centre Miri.
She said the method is proven to be 99 per cent effective when taught properly because a lot of scientific research had been done on the method by John Billings.
She disclosed in China where this method of family planning was implemented by the government statistics showed a dramatic decrease in abortion rate in the country. She said this is the natural side effect of using this method.
Inspite of the effectiveness of this method, Bourke bemoaned the fact that most women are not aware of this option that they have in family planning.
"Women everywhere have the right to this knowledge and that they have the right to a choice," said Bourke.
She stressed women can easily use this method as it is simple and basic.
All they have to do is to keep track of their ovulation cycle, it is about knowing their bodily cycle of fertility and infertility, said pointed out.
There are many advantages for not only women, couples and families, but also the state for women to have this information, she added.
"This knowledge about natural fertility and infertility is very inexpensive to acquire, and can be put into practical use right throughout a couple’s reproductive life, " said Bourke.
"It can be used to achieve a pregnancy, to space pregnancies and can also be used to alert a woman to the state of her reproductive health, "she added.
Once a woman understands what is normal for her during her menstrual cycles, she is then aware of the early signs of any abnormality. She can then seek appropriate medical care, she explained.
“I know of one woman who undoubtedly saved her life because she knew the Billings Ovulation Method and identified a change in her normal fertile patterns and was able to have early diagnosis and successful treatment for cervical cancer,” Bourke said. ENDS.

human life international congress
MIRI: The multi-billionaire dollar abortion industry is humanity's ultimate killing machine- every year an estimated 50 million babies were put to death globally just through surgical abortion.
“A rough estimate of 250 million babies die annually through chemical abortion,” said the president of Human Life International Father Thomas Euteneuer.
He to this to reporters during a press conference prior to the 16th Human Life International Asia Pacific Congress on Faith, Life & Family yesterday.
Also present were the bishop of Miri, Bishop Anthony Lee, the executive director of HLI Asia Oceania Dr Ligaya Acosta, the director of Research and Training for HLI Dr Brian Clowes, the president of the Ovulation Method Research & Reference Centre Australia Kerry Bourke and the political secretary to the chief minister Robert Laing Anyie.
Abortion has been described by some writers and scholars as the “silent holocaust” because its victims are helpless against this killing machine made by man himself.
“This is a global attack on Life, Marriage and Family and we in the pro-life movement describes this sinister assault on the sanctity of life as the culture of death. By definition, the culture of death is when a society legalises abortion, the acceptance of the killing of babies in the womb. Roughly, two-thirds of the world's population are living under this culture of death, where abortion is practise on demand. And this culture is fast spreading around the world. Basically, this culture of death western culture. America essentially export abortion,” said Tom, an American himself.
“We are fighting against this culture of death that is corrupting everything it touches with the message of the culture of life. We got to tell people to have respect for life,” he added.
Euteneuer said this culture first started in communist Russia where the communist government legalised abortion in the 1920s. By 1955, Russia imposed this culture on the whole communist bloc and in the 1960s and early 1970s it has the domino effect on Europe.
There are a few countries that prohibit abortion, countries in Africa, Latin America. For example, El Salvador and Chile gives legal protection against abortion, disclosed Euteneuer.
Meanwhile, in his keynote address to more than 600 participants from 17 countries in the congress, Lee said the whole idea of contraception and abortion spread widely even among the christians.
“We have a battle at hand-a life and death battle. You cannot live an ordinary life with dignity today without upholding the sanctity and sacredness of life. You cannot look at the whole situation with folded arms and do nothing because things are happening right under our nose,” said Lee.
“Contempary society taught us that life begins at birth. In our pro-life activity we saw that this is entirely false. Life begins at conception and ends at natural death. The embryo in the mother's womb was just a lump of tissues, they say, it is not yet a human person until the soul is created. When is the soul created? At conception, we say. From the moment the embryo is formed, the soul is infused. As soon as the father's sperm penetrates the mother's egg a new human being is born. Science confirms this: the DNA of the father unites with the DNA of the mother to produce a new, different, distinctive DNA, having similar qualities with the parents' DNA but nevertheless a unique personal DNA, not found elsewhere, it cannot be repeated, replaced or substituted, ” he added. ENDS.
